Is this supposed to be funny?

What can you say about a movie that is this bad.
I presume that the filmmakers were looking to cash in on the recent success that Hollywood
has had with "teenage flicks" where all the characters want is to get
lucky. Granted, this film has managed to make a stack of money in the U.K, but is
unlikely to find success anywhere else. Why? Because it is just not funny.
I should have known what was to come when the only
other person in the cinema was one guy up the back who would not have looked out of place
at one of those old porno theatres.
It did not take long for this film to lose me
completely. In fact it was the very first scene that showed exactly what the
next ninety minutes would entail -- watching pathetically crass jokes that are so
unfunny that in the end they become totally offensive.
One by one, the so-called jokes are shoved down our
faces and anyone with half a brain will not find anything in this movie even remotely
funny; maybe that's why it made so much in the U.K. (For any British people reading this
review, I'm just kidding)
According to this film's media information kit, Harry
Enfield, who co-wrote and stars in this abomination of a movie, is "one of Britain's
most respected comedians". It is very easy to argue with that given his
performance in this film.
For starters, his character,Kevin, is probably one of
the worst comedic characters ever seen. Kevin is supposed to be an exaggerated
parody of today's teenagers, but surely no kid acts like this. Enfield's performance
is so over the top that it is extremely difficult to watch. His acting is so bad
that he makes Madonna look like an Oscar contender. In fact, he does not deliver one
funny line for the whole film.
On the upside, Kathy Burke is quite good as Kevin's
best mate Perry. Unlike Enfield, Burke has acting ability and she gives a creditable
performance given the totally unfunny script. It is hard to figure how Burke, who won the
Best Actress Award at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival for her role in Nil by
Mouth, got roped into making this film.
Also, the film does have a good look to it and the
director, Ed Bye, has managed to accurately capture the total party atmosphere of Ibiza.
Unfortunately, it is not enough to save this film from
becoming probably the worst film to hit our screens this year. Hopefully it will be
a long time before another film this bad hits our fair shores.
